ABC fire extinguishers are recommended for fighting class A, B, and C fires. They are ideal for extinguishing fires caused by the combustion of solid materials, usually of an organic nature, where combustion normally occurs through the formation of embers (wood, coal, paper, fabrics, plastics, etc.), by the combustion of flammable liquids (oil, gasoline, alcohol, paint, waxes, varnishes, etc.), or by the combustion of flammable gases (natural gas, butane, propane, acetylene, ethylene, etc.).
The ABC fire extinguisher is very efficient in fighting fires because the chemical powder does not disperse as much in the atmosphere as a gas, allowing it to attack the flames more quickly and effectively, in addition to being non-toxic and non-conductive. However, the chemical powder is corrosive and hinders visibility during extinguishing.
ABC fire extinguishers are the most widely used as they have an action that covers three different types of fires. They are mainly indicated for office buildings, buildings with a low risk of fire, and automobiles, since their action is effective in extinguishing class A fires (wood, coal, paper, fabrics, plastics…), class B fires (oil, gasoline, alcohol, paint, waxes, varnishes…), and class C fires (natural gas, butane, propane, acetylene, ethylene…).
ABC fire extinguisher powder is composed of ammonium phosphate. This extinguishing agent acts by inhibiting the spread of fires, eliminating the chain reaction of the fire and preventing it from multiplying, acting quickly and effectively to extinguish the flames.
